Prefolds and Flats
|
Prefold and flat cloth diapers are the work horses of the many cloth diapers out there. Despite the many new choices and technological advances prefolds and flats are still the best selling cloth diapers.
 DYED PREFOLDS HERE
Simple looking, prefolds and flats are sometimes mistaken to be the hardest cloth diapers to figure out. However with the way cloth diapering has changed through the years, prefolds have been made simple and are still ever so popular. They are basically one wide layer of fabric has been folded back and forth to create layers of fabric which is then sewn together with stitching that divides the diaper in thirds. The prefold is then sewn with a colored thread that identifies the size of the diaper. Often you will find prefolds labeled with a 4x6x4 or 4x8x4 designation. The first and last numbers are the number of layers of fabric in the outer panels and the middle number is the number of layers in the middle panel. The number of layers in the prefold along with the dimensions of the diaper will determine how well the diaper absorbs. But you can`t compare cotton prefolds to hemp fleece prefolds. One layer of hemp fleece is much more absorbent than one layer of cotton so a 4x8x4 Premium Prefold will be similar in absorbency to a 2x3x2 Large Hemp Prefold.
Flats are just that, thin flat squares that come in a variety of fabric types and sizes. These can be a bit more cofusing to use at first as you decide how to fold them and thus give your own layering where your baby needs it most. Flats are still well loved as once you know a couple folds you have a ton of versatility in use. (Plus they dry in about 10 minutes!)
Versatility is the cornerstone of both prefolds and flats, and the reason they have made it through the years of cloth diaper changes. You can use them as your staple diaper paired up with a cute cover by simply laying them in the cover or using a snappi fastener first for the more traditional folds with wool covers and wool soakers, shorties and longies. Pins can also be used if you want to go coverless and let your little one `breathe` a bit better.
For better absorbtion preemie prefolds folded lengthwise make great doublers in another prefold. And also in other styles of diapers, like fitteds, all-in-ones (AIO`s), and pockets. Which brings me to using prefolds as the `stuffing` in pockets. Very easy to trifold them lengthwise and then stuff in your favorite pocket diaper. So you save $ by having two uses.
